Chaetura Canyon Bird Sanctuary – A Local Treasure

Did you know there’s a 12-acre bird sanctuary located in Apache Shores?

Chaetura Canyon Bird Sanctuary, operated by Travis Audubon, protects a rugged piece of Central Texas habitat that provides a home and migratory resting place for native birds and other wildlife. The sanctuary is internationally known for its work with Chimney Swifts and has recorded more than 170 bird species, including the endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler.

Chaetura Canyon is a nature preserve rather than a public park, so it is open to visitors only during scheduled programs and special events.

Interested in visiting? Check the Travis Audubon calendar for upcoming programs and events.

Interested in seeing a Chimney Swift habitat up close? You can see one at the Indian Creek Trailhead, built by a local neighborhood teen.
